St Peter & St Paul Parish Church, Tonbridge
Conductor: Matthew Willis
Arutunian: Trumpet Concerto
Soloist Matilda Lloyd – winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year (brass section)
Chausson: Symphony in Bflat.
Moving to Europe for the first orchestral concert of the Society’s 2016-17 season, the gentle beauty of the Debussy Nocturnes will be followed by Arutunian’s Trumpet Concerto, with local soloist Matilda Lloyd, the 2014 BBC Young Musician of the year ‘Brass Category’ winner, as soloist. The concert concludes with Chaussons Symphony in B flat.
With the composers’ taking inspiration from various art forms, Debussy was inspired by a series of impressionist paintings of the same name by Whistler. The Russian composer Alexander Arutunian borrowed from the melodic and rhythmic characteristics of Armenian folk music in writing his most well-known piece, completed in 1950. In contrast, the Symphony in B flat by Amédée-Ernest Chausson, may also be described as impressionistic in nature.
