Kent Trading Standards alert – Winter Fuel Payments

Dear Kent Residents

We know how quick criminal scammers are to develop new ways to target residents, so it’s important you are alert and ensure your friends and neighbours are also aware.

There are already Winter Fuel Payment scam messages being sent to residents. By impersonating the Department of Work and Pensions they either try to steal your data, financial information or money.

For Winter Fuel Payments you do not need to do anything – payments will be made automatically. For more information visit GOV.uk.

Parkinson’s UK

Parkinson’s UK is the charity that drives better care, treatments and quality of life for those affected by Parkinson’s. We have a UK-wide network of friendly local advisers and each covers a different local area. We can assist whether a person has the condition themselves, is a carer, friend or family member of someone with Parkinson’s or is an agency involved with the care of someone affected by Parkinson’s.

We can help if someone:

is looking for advice and information
is looking for tips on how to deal with the day-to-day impact of Parkinson’s
needs emotional support, whether they have a Parkinson’s diagnosis, are a carer, or a family member/friend
wants to find out more about the services available in their area
wants to learn about their rights and entitlements
needs help navigating the benefits process
needs information on where to find grants and financial help
is looking for support on employment issues
needs support with anything else relating to their life with Parkinson’s

We are here so that no-one has to face Parkinson’s alone.

Volunteer with the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust

Volunteer with us and help us deliver outstanding care to our patients. Our volunteers are an integral part of the MTW team, making a real difference to our patients and supporting our staff in so many ways.

Who do we need?

We are looking for volunteers to help at Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital.

What do we need?

The roles include meeting and greeting patients and visitors; supporting our Chaplaincy team; helping our Macmillan Cancer Support team; befriending; gardening; admin support and so much more.

Hadlow Food Bank

Life is tough at the moment and, for some people, it could well get tougher in the coming weeks and months.

If you find yourself in need of some extra food support for any reason, then please remember that St Mary’s runs an emergency food bank.

If you need help then please come to the church on Thursdays between 10.30 and 12.30 (no appointment needed).

If you have children in Hadlow Primary School then food help can also be obtained by contacting Sharon Vanns at the school.

Please don’t hesitate to use us if you need us.

Action Fraud: Vaccines

Action Fraud is warning the public to remain vigilant as criminals begin to take advantage of the roll out of the coronavirus vaccine to commit fraud.

The messages below are to help councils promote safe behaviours:

The vaccine is free of charge.
The NHS will never ask you for your bank account or card details.
The NHS will never ask you for your PIN or banking password.
The NHS will never arrive unannounced to your home to administer the vaccine.
The NHS will never ask you to prove your identity by sending copies of personal documents such as your passport, driving licence, bills or pay slips.
If you receive a call you believe to be fraudulent, hang up.
If you are suspicious about an email you have received, forward it to report@phishing.gov.uk.
Suspicious text messages should be forwarded to the number 7726, which is free of charge.
If you believe you are the victim of a fraud, please report this to Action Fraud as soon as possible by calling 0300 123 2040 or visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk.

Free, safe and anonymous online support for young people in Kent

A mental health and wellbeing online platform for young people has been extended for all young people across Kent.

As part of the Headstart Kent Programme, the Kooth digital mental health support service has already given one in five young people, aged 10 to16, easy access to an online community of peers and a team of experienced counsellors.

The service is free and can be accessed at the Kooth website. It’s a place to get advice, information and support 24/7. You can chat to a friendly qualified counsellor Monday to Friday between 12pm and 10pm and Saturday and Sunday between 6pm and 10pm.

Kent County Council’s Director of Integrated Children’s Services, Stuart Collins, said: “In these unprecedented times it is important for all of us that we continue to focus on the emotional health and well-being of children. I am happy to be able to support the increase in access to safe online support through developing the Kooth offer across Kent in this way.”
The NHS Kent and Medway Clinical Commissioning Group’s Senior Commissioner for Children and Young People’s Services, Sue Mullin, said: “We are pleased to be working with KCC colleagues to support the extension of Kooth. We know that Kooth offers children and young people across Kent a confidential service whether it’s accessing articles, joining forums or accessing scheduled times with a counsellor. The feedback from our children and young people has been very positive, and we are pleased that we are now able to provide the opportunity to access Kooth to more children and young people and truly see the impact of jointly commissioning this service.”

The service is funded by Headstart Kent on behalf of the National Lottery Community Fund, NHS Kent and Medway Clinical Commissioning Group and Kent County Council’s Public Health Grant.

Young people in Kent can also continue to access advice, information and support:

Access Moodspark or the Kent Resilience Hub to learn about mental health and find tips and resources to keep emotionally healthy
Text ChatHealth for support around physical and mental health on 07520 618850. The number is monitored Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
Complete a form for the Children and Young People’s Counselling Service at the NHS School Public Health Service.
Call the Single Point of Access (SPA) on 0300 123 4496 if you are not sure what help is needed.
Access the Big White Wall if aged 16+ for anonymous support.

For people of all ages needing mental health support, just text the word “Kent” or “Medway” to 85258. This is a new 24/7 text service provided by SHOUT and the Crisis Text Line as part of the Kent and Medway Release the Pressure campaign.

KCC Kent Together – 24 hour helpline for vulnerable people

A 24 hour helpline has been set up to support vulnerable people in Kent who need urgent help, supplies or medication.

The helpline – called Kent Together – provides a single, convenient point of contact for anyone in the county who is in urgent need of help during the Coronavirus outbreak. It is a collaboration between KCC, central Government, District, Borough and local councils, the voluntary and community sector, the NHS, emergency services and other partners to ensure help is at hand for vulnerable people.

It is also the place to report your concerns about the welfare of someone else.

Kent County Council Leader Roger Gough said:

“In every district and borough throughout Kent and Medway there has been an incredible and heartening response to this pandemic, and we have a huge army of remarkable, public-spirited volunteers who are ready and willing to help each other through these challenging times. We now need to make sure that these vital resources are directed to where they are most needed. The new central helpline will link to Community Hubs across the county and ensure that we are effectively working hand in hand with the amazing teams out in the heart of communities in every part of Kent.”

Kent Together is being coordinated by Kent County Council which will feed the information through the network of volunteers, district and borough council teams and local support groups, to ensure people get the support they need, when they need it.

People’s needs will be assessed and staff will liaise with Community Hubs in the districts to prioritise those who need urgent help.
Mr Gough added:

“At this unprecedented time, we all need to support each other to cope with the changes to our lifestyles we’ve had to make in order to delay the spread of Covid-19. I appreciate those radical changes have brought about difficulties and uncertainty and that we are all having to live our lives very differently. I hope with the launch of this service we can help bring some sense of familiarity and comfort back to those who desperately need it.”

If you are vulnerable and have an urgent need that cannot be met through existing support networks, you can contact the Kent Together helpline or call on 03000 41 92 92. It is a 24 hour service.

WARNING: Isolation Scams

We have been alerted to some unscrupulous people who are already taking advantage of our elderly and vulnerable during this time of isolation. Please warn anybody who may fall into this bracket NOT to give any personal information to anybody over the phone or who suddenly appears at their door unless they can identify them and know them.

A word of warning Do not accept offers of assistance from anyone unknown to you other than volunteers vouchsafed by the community team members responsible for organising volunteers.

Hadlow Parish Council Voluntary Assistance Scheme

A huge thank you to all those who have contacted the Parish Office with offers of help and assistance. Please can we ask everyone willing to volunteer, together with all residents requiring assistance, to complete the appropriate registration forms. These can be found with the recent newsletter sent to every Hadlow and Golden Green resident, collected from Hadlow Bakery, Pharmacist, Library and from the link below. Alternatively email the parish office: clerk@hadlowpc.co.uk and we will send you the form.

It would also be useful for us to know of those already looking after a neighbour or friend who may then require help if they become unwell.

Your cooperation with the administration of this scheme is very much appreciated and in the best interests of all those involved. We are anxious to ensure we reach anyone who may otherwise find themselves isolated. Equally it is important to remember that volunteers must advise if they become unwell so that alternative arrangements can be made.
