Mission Hall Hire

Assuming Covid restrictions are eased we can open the Mission Hall for bookings from 19 July. A thank you to everybody for your patience over the last 18 months and especially to Diana Gibb who has kept it going for dance classes. To book, contact Rob Seall (1 Bell Cotts 01732 850664 r.seall@gmail.com). And we welcome Roo Cummings who is going to do hall cleaning – thank you to all the others who offered to help.

Recycling Collections

TMBC’s refuse contractor Urbaser blame HGV driver shortages for the temporary suspension of recycling collections. They hope to resume on 12 July but for GG, that’s a household waste week (black bin), so our recycling collection (green-lidded bin & box) will presumably have to wait another week! In the meantime, TMBC say if you can’t store it, you can put your recycling out with your black bin. It will not be recycled, but burnt with general waste to generate electricity. Alternatively, they suggest taking it to a recycling centre or one of the extra cardboard/paper banks that have been installed in five locations, including Sainsbury’s car park and Longmead Sports Ground in Tonbridge. Black bin, brown bin (garden waste) and food caddies are being collected as normal. More information on the TMBC website. (Don’t waste your time asking for a council tax rebate as TMBC say it’s a tax, not a direct payment for services received, so won’t offer refunds or rebates).

Bye-bye Co-op, Hello Budgens

The convenience store at the Three Elm Lane BP garage has changed hands and is now a Budgens store. A 2019 Which? report on convenience stores gave Budgens a customer satisfaction rating of 55% – 5th in their list of 14 brands. Their stores are franchised to local independent retailers.

Golden Green Fete – 15th August?

We are still intending to hold the fete on August 15th, hoping that restrictions will have eased and everybody will have a bit more confidence in gathering. I’m starting to think about how we organise things this year. I would very much welcome ideas: new things to do, stalls to include and as always we welcome helpers for things like the tea tent, tombola and children games etc. It’s always a good opportunity to reacquaint ourselves with neighbours and enjoy an egg-and-spoon race. Ideas please. We will organise a meeting at the Bell in early August to finalise the plan.

Doorstep Crime

KCC Trading Standards warn that doorstep crime is on the increase. Criminals (also called rogue traders, cowboy builders, building and gardening scammers) cold call on households offering convincing deals to try to get you to agree to having work carried out. Doorstep crime and financial abuse affects the most vulnerable in our communities. Victims are 2.5 times more likely to end up in care. Learn to spot the signs and protect your family, neighbours and friends. See the KCC Trading Standards website for more information.
