Golden Green AGMs
Monday 12 May 8.15pm
The AGMs for the Golden Green Association and the Golden Green Mission Hall Charity will be held in the village hall on Monday 12 May at 8.15pm and will last 7 minutes – followed by drinks in the Bell. Contact Alec Pelmore if you’d like a copy of the AGMs papers before the meeting. Extract from the Chairman’s report:
“The GGA has had another successful year. Our main activities are: producing the monthly Hamlet newsletter; managing the village hall; a community lunch in January; fish ’n’ chips quiz night in March; fete in June; carol service in December; regular coffee mornings in the hall; and minibus outings. We have a team of enthusiastic volunteers who help with the fete and the community lunch but, 30 years later, it would be good to get more participation from the next generation of village residents. We are of course up against the reality that newcomers arrive with friends and interests across the country and with a limited need to be involved in our little community. But I believe that community will continue to be very important in our lives. So get involved – find out how you can join in – and it would be good to see new blood inject new enthusiasm and ideas.”
Derrick Mason 1930–2025
We report the sad death of Derrick Mason at the age of 95. Way back in 1970, Derrick was the driving force in the creation of the Golden Green Association and also in the project to convert the Mission Chapel (as it then was) into a community hall; so as a village we owe him a huge debt of gratitude. He was also President of the Round Table, Chairman of the Magistrates Bench and on the board of Prison Visitors. What an active, well-lived life. Rest in peace.

Road Closures and Works
Victoria Road: Causeway one.network reports that the road will be ‘temporarily obstructed’ causing a 15-minute delay from 6-9 May. The unspecified work is being done by CityFibre so presumably relates to telecoms improvement, which can only be a good thing.
Court Lane: From 15-19 May, carriageway repair works are to be carried out about 100 metres east of the junction with Victoria Road (I think this means pothole mending!) Anyway, it could cause delays apparently.
Carpenters Lane, Hadlow: The road is scheduled to be closed from 8am 12 May to 5pm 13 May for works by South East Water.
Overnight closures will continue on the northbound A21 on various dates until 2 August. More information including diversion routes can be found on the traffic map at https://one.network/ though we can’t guarantee that it’s up to date! Any deviation from the dates given are down to the contractor(s) concerned.
You can report non-urgent problems with roads and pavements to KCC online at https://www.kent.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/report-a-problem. This includes street light faults, potholes, drainage, traffic signal faults and overgrown vegetation (including hedges and grass).

Hadlow Church Survey: “An Inclusive Vision for 2030 – Sustainability and Community”
The Parochial Church Council (PCC) of St Mary’s Church in Hadlow are seeking your views and ideas on proposed changes to the church and on how the building and church community can work more effectively together towards a zero-carbon future. They have circulated a short questionnaire that explains the project’s aims and asks your views. The PCC would like as many views as possible for this important step. The deadline is 18 May (or sooner if possible). Copies of the questionnaire are also available in the church porch, the Old School Hall lobby, and the Hadlow dentist and Medical Centre. It can also be downloaded from the St Mary’s website.
Friends of St Mary’s Church
The PCC are seeking leadership and support for a Friends of St Mary’s group. Anyone wishing to help with this please contact the PCC Secretary Richard Hopkinson at friends@stmaryshadlow.org.uk.
