Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2022
Did you know the Royal British Legion (RBL) helped Sean Connery learn to be a French polisher before he took up acting? Today the RBL continue to help ex-servicemen and women transition to civilian life. Read about the many ways that the RBL support the Armed Forces community.
Wearing a poppy is also about Remembrance – honouring those whose service and sacrifice help to preserve our freedoms.
Thank you for supporting the 2022 RBL Poppy Appeal. Your local Poppy Appeal Organisers are Sean & Anne (gghamlet@outlook.com 01732 850038).
Elaine Belsey – Rod Writes
I would like to thank family, friends and neighbours for their kind words of condolence, the many cards received on the death of my wife Elaine (Tress), the donations to the Stroke association and the Hillside Animal Sanctuary Norfolk that has now amounted to £605 … plus the ton of carrots kindly donated to the Animal Sanctuary.
Elaine was trained on leaving education as a children’s nurse, joined the Women’s RAF (WAAF’s) at the age of 18 years assigned to the medical wing of that service, and worked at two hospitals plus the Modbury General in Adelaide Australia. On returning to the UK she worked, as did I, for The Wellcome Foundation pharmaceutical company in research, development and production of human and animal medication.
When we first came to Bourne Park we were both very involved in the then Bourne Park Residents Association. For 14 years Elaine was very much the inspiration that allowed us to enjoy two outings each year to various locations, always with interesting stops en route; a Christmas Lunch and a spring lunch each year at locations such as the Golf Club, Hadlow Manor; even seeing the London Christmas Lights with fish and chip supper. This was all paid for from money raised from early morning boot fairs, raffles and lottery funds. All our events were well attended by most if not all BP residents, about 50 people, with each persons needs carefully catered for.
Elaine and I were part of the Dartford Archaeology group the unearthed the Saxon bowl now known as the Darenth Bowl. This was yet another activity that she got from when her class at school worked for a period of time during summers holidays on the Lullingstone Roman villa.
Elaine was the most caring and understanding person that I have ever known, and in every way she was and will continue to be the wind beneath my wings.
May I conclude by thanking The Bell Team for giving us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Elaine’s life, the food provided and the service was excellent. Thank You.
Road Closures and Roadworks
Traffic disruption caused by roadworks in and around GG is finally easing this month but the following works remain to be completed:
- SGN’s temporary traffic lights on Three Elm Lane are due to continue to operate until 11 November.
- Blackmans Lane is now rescheduled to open on 3 December
- The A26 at Hadlow will be closed for the final weekend 4-7th November and overnight Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th November to resurface the road.
This information was taken from the traffic map at one.network on 2 November – we can’t guarantee that it’s up to date! Any deviation from the dates given are down to the contractor(s) concerned.
We have also had notice that there will be gas mains work on Hartlake Road (top end) from 21st November for 4 weeks which may involve some closures. Watch this space.
