Carol Service
Sunday 18 December 4pm Mission Hall
Last Christmas we had organised a service to include Pat’s clarinet group but which, because of the Covid surge, morphed into a brass singalong outside the pub. The plan this year is to try to resurrect the carol service. We still don’t have a vicar so there will be a mixture of readings, carols and clarinet with Christmas arrangements. Pop it in your diaries now and let’s hope the current surge in Covid cases doesn’t derail us again!
Minibus Trips
Alec has driven minibus outings for a variety of groups from Golden Green and Hadlow this summer – Rye, Hastings, Whitstable, Tenterden, Chiddingstone, Wisley, Merriments Garden Centre – all good fun. If anybody wants to organise a group outing, just get in touch. Suggestions for other outings either this winter or next summer would be welcome. One thought is a trip to the Bedgebury Christmas lights. If you are interested, contact Alec.

Road Closures and Roadworks
The main disruption to traffic this month is going to be the closure in Golden Green of Hartlake Rd and temporary lights on Three Elm Lane; the continuing closures on the A21; and the weekend closures in Hadlow:
- Blackmans Lane is due to reopen on 7 October but roadworks continue to 21 October.
- Hartlake Rd is scheduled to be closed 3-21 October while SGN continue to upgrade the gas network between Three Elm Lane and Goldhill House.
- SGN roadworks are returning to Victoria Rd 3-14 October but shouldn’t affect through traffic much.
- SGN’s temporary traffic lights are due to be installed on Three Elm Lane just past Sherenden Park (towards East Peckham) from 3 October to 24 February 2023!
- The A26 at Hadlow will be closed for three weekends starting 21 October to resurface the road.
- The A21 overnight closures between Vauxhall and Morleys roundabouts continue in October.
- Finally Seven Mile Lane will be closed at Mereworth 5-7 October
This information was taken from the traffic map at one.network on 3 October – we can’t guarantee that it’s up to date! Any deviation from the dates given are down to the contractor(s) concerned.
Rosemary Blackburn
The Blackburn family would like to thank all those who donated at Rosemary’s Memorial Day, raising £203 for the Hospice in the Weald.
Leather on Hartlake Willow
“Leather on willow and afternoon teas
Plum bread with butter and slices of cheese
In the pavilion ladies cut bread
Should anyone fancy a sandwich instead”
From “Simply Cricket” by David Threadgold
Ever wonder where the willow from which cricket bats are made comes from? Well, some of it comes from Hartlake Rd! You may have noticed that a few big willows were cut down last month –felled for Gray-Nicholls, a family firm in Robertsbridge who have been making cricket bats since 1855. Many famous players have used their equipment, including England’s Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook, James Anderson and Mike Atherton. The trees are harvested on a 30-year cycle and the stumps will grow again.
Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2022
This year’s appeal is from 27 October to 12 November. Every poppy counts, and your contribution will make a real difference to the lives of the Armed Forces community who have given so much for their country. If you can spare an hour or two to help with house-to-house collections in Golden Green or Hadlow, please contact Sean on 01732 850048.
A Little Light Music
Do you play an orchestral instrument? Did you know Hadlow has its own amateur orchestra? We’re a friendly group who meet monthly to have fun playing light classics and arrangements. No audition necessary. If you’re a beginner or an expert, or just rusty, why not join us in Hadlow on Saturday afternoon on 22 October? Under 12s must be accompanied by an adult. Contact Anne (gghamlet@outlook.com 01732 850038) for more details.
